New Items
Gregor Eisenhorn starts this collection as the kind of Inquisitor the Imperium would put on a recruitment poster: rigorous, orthodox, and entirely certain of the line between the things he protects and the things he destroys.
He does not end it there. Over four novels the cases get worse, the enemies get further out of reach, and each time the honest tools prove insufficient he reaches for something he would once have burned a man for touching. Nobody makes him. He talks himself into every step, and the arguments are good ones, which is the whole point.
It reads as detective fiction more than as military science fiction: investigations, informants, a recurring cast who accumulate history, and a galaxy that feels enormous because the protagonist keeps having to travel across it. For a lot of readers this is where Warhammer 40,000 stopped being a wargame setting and became somewhere they wanted to spend time.
New readers, first and foremost. This is the collection people hand to someone who says they want to try Warhammer 40,000 fiction and does not know where to start, and it needs no prior knowledge of anything.
It also suits readers who like their science fiction closer to a mystery than to a battle report. There are firefights, but the spine of the thing is Eisenhorn working out what happened and who benefits.
Four novels and four stories in one volume is a substantial amount of reading for a single purchase, which is worth knowing before you pick it up alongside something else.
