Heldanarr Fall would like everyone to leave him alone. He lives in the Burning Valley, a kingdom cut out of the Aqshian desert, and he has watched the Azyrites arrive with their wealth, their certainty and a god who did not appear to notice what they did on the way in. Held kept his people's customs and never once prayed to Sigmar, which was working out fine.
Then he saves a Sigmarite priestess from being killed, her problems follow her to his door, and the quiet ends. What comes next is a war of vengeance against Sigmar's faithful, which puts him in front of the Stormcast Eternals and a commander named Ildrid Stormsworn who is considerably better at this than he is. Alone, he cannot win. The only way to make it a fight is to reach for older powers, which cost exactly what you would expect.
The novel is built on a genuinely uncomfortable question rather than a twist. If the god's servants behave like tyrants and the Champions of Chaos keep their word, which side is the righteous one? Held has to answer it, and the answer decides who he becomes.
Readers who want Age of Sigmar fiction with a moral argument in it. Most of the Mortal Realms canon is written from inside Sigmar's cause; this one is written from underneath it, by someone with reasons.
Slaves to Darkness collectors will find a sympathetic account of why a person chooses that path. Stormcast players may find it uncomfortable, which is the intent.
At 448 pages it is a long book by Black Library standards, and most of that length goes on Held himself rather than on battles.

No. It is a standalone novel and it introduces everything it needs.
Both, from the wrong end. The protagonist starts as neither and the book follows him toward one of them while giving the other a fair hearing.
