The Emperor's Children have spent a long time as scattered warbands, each one chasing its own excesses across whatever world was nearest, and each one certain it is the Legion's true inheritor. Fulgrim has decided that ends.

The task he sets them sounds simple enough: take the Imperial world of Crucible and bring him the head of the Black Templar defending it. It does not stay simple. The quick offensive becomes a grinding siege, the defenders are better than advertised, and the Legion proves at least as willing to turn its weapons inward as outward, because a shared objective does not resolve who Fulgrim will actually favour when it is done.

What the book is really about is the price of that favour. Everyone competing for it has to decide what they will give up to win, and the novel is unsentimental about how little is left of some of them by the end.

Emperor's Children collectors, who have a great deal of new material to catch up on, and readers who want the internal politics of a Chaos Legion rather than another siege told from the Imperial side.
