The Solar War is over. The defences of the Sol System have been broken and the guns have started firing at Terra itself, which is where this book opens.
What follows is the ground war outside the Imperial Palace, and it is written at a scale the setting rarely attempts honestly. Every metre of ground is bought with lives measured in the billions, the air itself becomes poison, and the outer redoubts are never going to hold no matter how many loyal primarchs are thrown into them. Horus has generals of his own to spend, and he spends them: Mortarion's plague weapons on one side of the line and Angron's madness on the other.
This is the second book of the Siege of Terra and it follows directly from The Solar War. Where that novel was fleets and void fighting, this one is mud, bodies and attrition.
Anyone already reading the Siege of Terra, since this is the next volume. Beyond that it suits readers who want the Horus Heresy at its bleakest: this is the book in the sequence most concerned with what a war of this size does to ordinary people caught underneath it, rather than with the primarchs fighting above them.
Death Guard and World Eaters collectors will find their armies at full strength and worst behaviour here.
